Dermal fillers are a type of injectable designed to enhance the appearance of skin by filling in gaps in the lower layers of skin. At Mountain State Cosmetic Surgery in Beckley, WV, we offer a wide variety of dermal fillers for virtually all of your cosmetic needs. Here’s what you need to know about this type of injectable.
What Are Dermal Fillers?
Dermal fillers first stepped onto the cosmetic enhancement scene in the 1970s, nearly half a century ago. They were initially made with animal collagen, and most formulas contained bovine collagen as the primary ingredient. In other words, protein was taken from cow skin and injected into regions of the human face that lacked volume and human collagen.
Three decades would pass before anything better was invented and FDA-approved. In 2002, hyaluronic acid-based fillers were approved, and the options on the market exploded from there.
This type of injectable includes several subtypes, and each subtype has its own unique benefits. For example, most fillers today feature the active ingredient known as hyaluronic acid. Juvederm and Restylane are two product lines that feature this active ingredient.
However, the manufacturers of Juvederm and Restylane have developed several products within the product line. For instance, the manufacturer of Juvederm produced the original formula, known as Juvederm. Then, the manufacturer developed Juvederm Ultra, Juvederm Ultra Plus and Juvederm Voluma. Each formula is designed to enhance the appearance of a different region of the face.
Which Dermal Filler Is Right for Me?
Juvederm was the first dermal filler manufactured by Allergan. It was designed to treat one of the most commonly complained about facial features, deep nasolabial folds. Nasolabial folds are the deep lines that extend from the edge of your nose to the outer corners of your mouth. When these folds are caused by hyperactive muscles, they deepen when you smile. When they are caused by collagen and elastin loss, they deepen with age; only fillers can erase them.
Since Juvederm XC was the original formula, it is not the most durable dermal filler on the market. Depending on your health, skin health and lifestyle, you can expect the results of this filler to last anywhere from six to 12 months. However, you shouldn’t be discouraged. There are ways to extend the durability of your treatment results, including staying hydrated, eating plenty of protein and not smoking.
Juvederm Ultra Plus
Juvederm Ultra Plus is one of the most popular Juvederm products on the market. It was designed to erase lines and wrinkles from the perioral region of the face. There are several parts of the face that can be enhanced safely and effectively with this filler, but it is particularly good at smoothing the very deep wrinkles and folds around the nose and mouth.
While Juvederm Ultra typically lasts between six and nine months, Juvederm Ultra Plus has the advantage of being invented after Juvederm and Juvederm Ultra. A great deal of research went into increasing the durability of this treatment’s results. Thanks to incredible advances in cross-linking technology and more robust molecules used in the formula, you can expect the results of this treatment to last nine months to a year easily.
Voluma is another Juvederm product, but this one was designed to augment the cheeks. However, this product can be used for other applications than non-invasive cheek augmentation. It can completely recontour the middle of your face, enhancing the appearance of your cheekbones and lifting sagging cheek skin that makes you look far older than you actually are.
On average, you can expect the results of this treatment to last two years. If you don’t want to deal with looking old again, scheduling a maintenance treatment and waiting two weeks to regain your youthful appearance, you can schedule a maintenance session 12 to 18 months after your first session. A smaller dose of medication will be required, and you can continue to enjoy the full results for another two years or more.
Restylane is a dermal filler that is similar to Juvederm in that it is a hyaluronic acid-based dermal filler designed to fill in the deepest nasolabial folds. Like Juvederm, you won’t see the final results of the treatment immediately, but they will be worth the wait. Typically, you can expect the full results of treatment with this medication to last 18 months.
However, it is very important to note that the durability of the results depends on several factors, including the dose we use, where the medication is injected and how severe your wrinkles are at the time of treatment. When a higher dose is used, your skin takes longer to break down the medication fully, so your results will last longer. Regardless of dose, nasolabial folds will remain erased for longer than volume added to your lips or the backs of your hands.
Restylane Silk is a Restylane product that was designed to augment the lips, but the benefits don’t stop there. This popular Restylane formula was the first dermal filler approved by the FDA to smooth lines around the lips, as well as augmenting the lips. Essentially, it does two jobs at once.
If that’s not exciting enough, the results are seen quickly, a mere 14 days after injections. Furthermore, they are pretty durable, especially considering that this was the first dual-purpose lip filler approved. If you receive treatment with this injectable to augment your lips and smooth unwanted laugh lines or smile lines, you can expect the results to last six months. In fact, 77% of people who received this formula were still satisfied with their results after half a year.
Sculptra is a poly-L lactic acid-based dermal filler designed to augment skin that lacks volume due, primarily, to significant weight loss. This filler may be recommended to you if you were really sick for several weeks or months and your cheeks became gaunt and hollow. This incredibly advanced dermal filler isn’t just FDA-approved to augment the cheeks. Rather, it is FDA-approved to augment virtually any part of your body except your lips and eyelids.
The durability of results varies from individual to individual, but it is very safe to say that you can expect your results to last at least two years if you choose this dermal filler to enhance your appearance. If you drink alcohol in moderation, don’t smoke, and eat a fairly healthy diet, the results of treatment with this dermal filler may last up to five years. During your consultation, we’ll give you specific, actionable advice on how to get the most out of your treatments.
Am I a Good Candidate for Dermal Filler Injections?
To determine if you are a good candidate for dermal fillers, you should schedule an initial consultation. The guidelines set by the FDA regarding who is a good candidate for injections vary based on the dermal filler in question. Here’s a brief overview of what it takes to be a good candidate for non-invasive anti-aging injectables.
Candidacy for Hyaluronic Acid-Based Fillers
To be a good candidate for hyaluronic acid-based fillers, you must first be at least 21 years of age. If you think you might be pregnant, take a pregnancy test to ensure you are not pregnant before considering Juvederm or Restylane products. Insufficient research has been conducted regarding whether these injectables affect a growing fetus. You should also not consider the products in question if you are nursing.
You should not receive Juvederm injections if you are allergic to lidocaine. All formulas ending in the letters “XC” are formulas that include lidocaine for your comfort during and after your treatment. If you are allergic to lidocaine, let us know during your initial consultation; you may be a better candidate for Restylane, a hyaluronic acid-based dermal filler that does not include lidocaine in the formula. You should also be free from bleeding disorders.
Candidacy for Poly-L Lactic Acid-Based Fillers
To be a good candidate for poly-L lactic acid-based fillers, like Sculptra, you must be at least 18 years of age, not pregnant, and not nursing. Like hyaluronic acid-based fillers, there is not enough independent clinical research to suggest that injections are safe for a developing fetus or infant. You should also have realistic expectations about the results of treatment and the treatment process itself. We’ll discuss all of this with you during your initial consultation.
We will also discuss your medical history to determine if you are a good candidate for this type of filler. Most notably, we are looking for individuals who are free from autoimmune disorders, bleeding disorders, and clotting disorders. We also need to know if you have a heart condition that requires you to take NSAIDs daily, if you have a history of forming keloids and if you develop regular skin infections in or around the targeted treatment area.
How Long Will My Treatment Take?
Treatment times vary based on how many areas are being treated during a single session, the size of the areas being treated, and how many fillers need to be injected to achieve your desired results. If you’re only using one filler to treat one area of your face, such as your cheeks or lips, your session should take no longer than 15 to 30 minutes.
Contrastingly, if you are treating your cheeks, nose, mouth, and lips, you will need several formulas to achieve your desired results. In such a case, your treatment session may take up to an hour. Keep in mind, if you are allergic to lidocaine, we can administer injectables that do not include lidocaine. However, you may want your skin numbed by alternative means before your treatment. Using a topical numbing agent will add to your treatment time.
How Long Does the Recovery Process Last?
One of the primary advantages of dermal fillers over invasive procedures is there is no downtime or recovery process whatsoever. You are free to come in during your lunchbreak and return to work after your injections have been administered.
