Tonsillectomy

Tonsil Removal, Tonsillectomy

Tonsil Removal

A tonsillectomy is a surgical procedure to correct breathing problems associated with enlarged tonsils or to remove inflamed or infected tonsils (tonsillitis). Dr. Paine can perform a tonsillectomy on patients in the West Virginia area.

Should you consider a tonsillectomy?

Tonsillitis Treatment

Your tonsils are located on both sides of the back of your throat. The procedure is commonly performed for patients with tonsillitis, a condition in which the tonsils become infected or inflamed. Tonsillitis is more common with young children, but can occur in adults as well.

Dr. Paine recommends having a tonsillectomy if the patient experiences frequent cases of tonsillitis or does not respond well to antibiotic treatment.

Correction of Enlarged Tonsils

Dr. Paine also performs tonsillectomies to help patients who experience problems due to enlarged tonsils. Common problems associated with enlarged tonsils include:

  • Trouble breathing
  • Lapses in breath during sleep
  • Trouble swallowing

A Tonsil Removal is a fairly common procedure and provides several health benefits to the patient. Dr. Paine is experienced in performing tonsillectomies for both children and adults.

The Tonsillectomy Procedure

Dr. Paine performs the tonsillectomy as an outpatient procedure under general anesthesia. You will not feel any pain or discomfort during the procedure.

After Your Tonsillectomy

Some pain or discomfort is normal following a tonsillectomy. Most patients will experience a sore throat, but it is also normal to feel some pain around the jaw, neck or ears. We can provide you with information on specific pain medications that can help manage any discomfort you may be feeling after your procedure. Drinking lots of fluids and eating soft, easy-to-swallow foods will help make the recovery process easier. This is your chance to eat all the ice cream and pudding you can! You will need to spend about a week recovering from your procedure and should get plenty of bed rest. Avoid strenuous exercise for at least two weeks.
